Diving in Cape Verde
At the meeting between tropical waters and Atlantic currents, Cape Verde is a wonderland for divers of all levels.
Diving in the country is still in its infancy but the plethora of marine life and variety of underwater environments mean this country is sure to become one of the top dive destinations in the world.
Diving is so far possible on 3 of the 10 inhabited islands although more dive shops and spots are sure to open as tourism to the country expands. Cape Verde delights for divers with a variety interests. You are sure to be amazed not only by the interesting environments but also by the wide variety of marine life from humpback whales to the flying gurnard.
The sea and biodiversity of São Vicente:
The marine fauna is rich and diverse; the water is clear, normally with visibility of more than 25 meters. The average annual temperature of São Vicente varies between 23 º C to 31 º C and the sea between 22 º C and 28 º C. All this ingredients promote the existence of coral platforms and multicolored fish creating a amazing ambiance.
The biodiversity is immense and the chance of seeing species such as wahoo, skipjack, sharks or mantas. Also a permanent numerous of species of fish can be seen at different times of the year such as bream, mullet, esmoregal, snapper, grouper, moray eel, mullet, grouper, frog fishes. The migratory species such as tunas, dolphins, sperm whales, orcas and humpback whales suddenly arise.
The archipelago also has a sedentary population of tuna, which consists primarily of “Thunnus thynnus” (Yellowfin Tuna) and “Thunnus obesus” (Bigeye Tuna). Among the migratory tuna highlights the “Katsuwnus pelamis” (Skipjack Tuna) passing through Cape Verde from July to November. Because São Vicente is one of the most western point of the Cape Verde archipelago, is possible to see sharks, mantas and rays.
The most common shark species are the nurse, black-tip and sand tiger , but sometimes nature brings surprises like tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks and the big whale shark.
In Cape Verde there are five species of turtles: “Chelonia mydas” (Green Turtle), “Grimace Caretta” (Blue Turtle), “Eretmochelys imbricata” (Turtle Hull), “Lepidochely olivacea” and “Dermochelys coriacea” (brown tortoise) with a permanent presence of other migratory species. From June to July they seek the beaches to spawn and it is expected that the eggs hatch from August to December.
The still waters are home of the protected bays to a large number of crustaceans with particular emphasis on the lobsters.
There are four species of lobster: Scyllarides latus, echinatus Panulirus, Panulirus regius and Palinurus Charlestoni. Thelatter is endemic to Cape Verde where it is commonly known as pink lobster.
There numerous types of morays of different colors that you can see on every dive at São Vicente.
When to dive in Cape Verde
With a variety of temperatures ranging from 66 – 81°F (19 – 27°C), both a 3mm and 5mm may be appropriate depending on the location and season.
Diving is accessible year round, but the best season lies from April to November. Between colorful volcanic walls, cathedral-like caves and several well-preserved wrecks.
